I studied Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 1993 and following this a Master’s degree in Site-Specific Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art in 1995. Subsequently I trained as a teacher obtaining a PGCE in Art and Design from the Institute for Education. in 1999.

My main practice as an artist is in the field sculpture, but since 2002 I have also produced lithographic prints. One of the attractions of this medium is that it offers the chance to use stone for something other than carving. I actually see the direct nature of the lithographic process as akin to the process of carving. My lithographs are an extension of my sculptural practice and often reflect motifs and drives that characterise my three-dimensional work. I feel, however, that they stand by themselves as expressions of thought processes in a two-dimensional medium. I like the way the stone immediately responds to additive and reductive action and gives an extensive range of possibilities for mark-making.

I often work by subtraction, hence the affinity with my sculptural practice: after an initial layering of tusche washes, asphaltum, crayon, or Lo-shu wash, I take a print. Depending on the result and on whether or not I want to introduce other colours, I would then delete areas with pumice and sandpaper, or acid tint.
