STATEMENT AND SUBSCRIPTION OF MY WORK
My work has a strong commitment with nature.
Shells fascinate me already for a long time, just like fossils and stones. For me they are a metaphore for the stratification of time – layers of earth – lines of growth – historic ages.
Sometimes the shells are so abraded and petrified, that they look like a fossil; I can fantasy about the seas of the world, they have drifted in the course of ages.
I try to express this stratification in my work: transparency and composition contribute to this idea and also the way of printing, in several layers of colour.
Besides making lithographes, I often make “artists books”; series of graphic work, bounded in a book or portfolio.
My last book is is inspired by the old shell game Kai-awase from Japan of the 10 th. Century. The two halfs of shells were to be collected so as the images, painted inside, fitted together. These were two images of one story or two halfs of a poem.
I compare this game with an idea of the old Greek civilization, the so-called Symbolon. One example of a symbolon is a broken stone. The two halfs of this stone were kept by two parties of a matter of business as a voucher/certificate.
In this book I printed 4 fragments of stories of this old Greek idea, found in texts of Plato, Lucius, Herodotus and Euripides. I added a fragment of a story of prince Genji and 4 stories, written by myself (texts in Dutch).
The illustrations of these stories are lithographs of examples of the symbolon.
My work has been exhibited in galery’s, libraries and musea. Most of my artists books are aquired by the museum of books “Museum Meermanno” and the “Royal Library” in The Hague in Holland.
