Work Description
My work gets a spiritual pleasant sensation by radiating the different kinds of feelings that occur during the process of living at present and desires spurted from the unconsciousness as images. Such series of working action can be a way of managing myself and a process of finding the true self by getting out of the distracting thoughts and fixed ideas that appeared from social action effects by expressing the oppressed emotions extemporarily.
The characteristics shown on works as the expression of emotion are extremely private and show the autobiographic state by approaching the inner language in metaphorical situation and it is how I communicate with the world through the works by unfolding and showing the residual products of the emotions obtained from my private life. Thus I express myself that is transformed into drawn people, animals or other images and express thoughts that are inherent in the consciousness of me. They are usual emotions such as fears, depression, happiness, sadness and others that are experienced by living the present society, but which are images of the inner world that approach as big problems.
At present, the topic of the current time, or the periodic sympathy that many people feel is not unrelated with me. Among things like the society that changes rapidly, the differences between the sudden superiority and inferiority and the capability of life that manages the reality that is engaged with these, the economical measurement, shortcut to abundant life, many ideas about happiness, difference of value of love and relationship between people that make the cores of private life and in psychological space like a maze, I see myself who cannot find a way to move forward. After all, that is the world of works that I treat. Therefore my work sometimes scatters those unarranged emotions on screen.
They appear in imperfect forms or those forms sometimes overlap again. Various forms created can make a harmony with patterns depending on the state of emotions or can be expressed as dissonances of matters that are not in order or harmony. Like this, each work is the expression about the vague reality and desire of the ideal world rather than realistic form due to a reason that my psychological factors that are affected by social surrounding situations are dominated and it expresses wrenched or exaggerated features rather than normal features due to the emotional presentation that seems like dreaming.
The engraving is an indirect medium. I work through the techniques of engraving as an abreaction of my emotion. Extemporary drawing or drawing expression does have an immediacy of emotional expression, but for engraving that is using a plate, the extemporization meets my intention and passes through the step of timing harmony and it is produced as purified image a little bit. It acts as a role that protects the indiscreet empathy by providing time and composure to see my emotional state from a step away.
Appropriately limited size and disassembly of plate and colors that are created depending on the corrosion level give such timing state. In other words, the engraving techniques that are treated as a method of emotional expression are the intermediate that enlightens the sense about my identity at the same time making an opportunity of looking back to myself. ■ Kwom, Hye-Jeong
